Does my car need suspension repair? Signs that say yes!

Freeport Automotive • 18 June 2023

With a faulty suspension, your vehicle is liable to handle roughly and unsafely. So when you first suspect that suspension trouble is brewing, you’ll want to have the mechanic take a look. At Freeport Automotive, our local mechanics are highly experienced with completing suspension repair in the greater Sacramento area.

Warning Signs of Suspension Failure

Sometimes, indications of suspension trouble will emerge while braking. With a bad suspension, it could take your vehicle noticeably longer to arrive at a complete stop after you’ve started to brake. Also, a failing suspension can make it feel like your car is lunging forward at a downward trajectory when you hit the brakes.

A common sign of a faulty suspension is that your vehicle starts bouncing wildly whenever the road gets a little rough. And if you hear clunking noises when you go over bumps, then you’ve got a sign of a bad spring. Another sign of a failing spring is that your car slouches in one corner.

You can also do a simple test to get a better idea of whether your suspension is in rough shape. To conduct this test, make sure your car is safely parked on flat ground, go to the front end, press down strongly on it, and rock it two times before releasing. After that, go to the rear end and rock it twice also. After you release, if your car rocks on its own more than three times, then you’ve got a sign of suspension trouble.

There are a few other common signs of a suspension problem to be mindful of. For one, if your car feels like it’s drifting/swaying when going around corners, then a bad suspension could be to blame. Also, if you see oil leaking out onto your shocks, then it’s probably time for replacement. And bald spots on tires may develop if a faulty suspension causes tire tread to wear down unevenly.
