Common Symptoms of Engine Trouble We Can Fix at Our Sacramento Auto Shop

Freeport Automotive • 20 May 2023

It’s important that you get to the shop when you first suspect that engine trouble is brewing. If you delay, then the issue could soon escalate and require repairs that are much more costly than should’ve been necessary. At Freeport Automotive, our local mechanics provide expert engine repair in the greater Sacramento area.

The Check Engine Light Turns On

An illuminated check engine light doesn’t automatically mean that your engine is on the verge of total failure. However, this does mean that you should visit the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging problems can be resolved before they get worse.

Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

If there are abnormal noises emerging from your engine, then you’ll definitely want to figure out what’s causing them ASAP. Knocking/tapping sounds can be caused by problems like bad rod bearing, a lean air/fuel mixture, and inadequate lubrication. Squealing noises are commonly caused by serpentine belt issues. And if you hear grinding sounds, then you could be dealing with a broken water pump or power steering pump.

Another common symptom of engine trouble is power loss. In old cars that have a ton of miles, it’s not necessarily a red flag if a small amount of power has slowly been lost over time. However, if your engine suddenly loses a substantial amount of power, then you could have a serious problem, such as piston or head gasket trouble.

Discolored/excessive exhaust smoke is another cause for concern. Black smoke suggests that too much fuel is being burned. Blue-tinted smoke is a symptom of an oil leak. And if there’s a lot of white smoke coming from your tailpipe, then you’ve got a sign of an internal coolant leak, and could be dealing with a blown head gasket.
