What are some of the most common reasons that engines won’t start?

Freeport Automotive • 15 August 2023

As soon as you notice that your vehicle is struggling to fire up, you’ll want to make it a top priority to get to the shop for diagnostics. If you delay, the issue could quickly get worse and leave you unable to get your car started at all. At Freeport Automotive, our local mechanics are highly experienced with identifying and fixing problems that cause no-start.

Common Problems that Cause No-Start

Fuel-related issues are commonly to blame for no-start. A malfunctioning fuel pump can prevent gas from transiting between your tank and engine. Symptoms of fuel pump trouble include surging, sputtering, worsening gas mileage, and a whining noise coming from your gas tank. Also, if your fuel filter is all clogged up, then there might not be enough fuel reaching your engine to get your car to fire up. To prevent this issue, it’s a good idea to get a new fuel filter about every 25,000 miles. Gunky fuel injectors can also make it harder for your car to start. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with removing pollutants from injectors and intake valves.

A faulty starter also often prevents engines from coming roaring to life. You could be dealing with a bad starter if you turn the key and your engine won’t start but you hear a clicking sound and your dash lights turn on.

Problems with the battery/charging system are another common cause of no-start. Various problems can cause a car battery to die, including loose/corroded connections, old age, parasitic draws, forgetting to turn off your headlights, and a faulty alternator. Signs of a malfunctioning alternator include problems with interior electrical accessories, dimming/flickering headlights, and an illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN or comes on in the shape of a rectangular battery icon.
