Quick Tips to Keep Your Engine Healthy for as Long as Possible

Freeport Automotive • 19 January 2023

To keep your engine running strongly for as long as possible, you’ll want to make sure you are treating it kindly. By taking some basic measures, you can help to ensure peak performance and maximum lifespan. At Freeport Automotive, our local mechanics provide expert auto maintenance in the greater Sacramento area that will help to maximize your engine’s lifespan.

Follow Your Oil Change Schedule

Typically, conventional oil needs to be changed at some point between 3,000 and 5,000 miles, while you can go significantly longer before changing synthetic oil. It’s best to refer to your owner’s manual to see the mileage points recommended for your particular vehicle. The right amount of clean oil will keep your engine sufficiently lubricated and prevent metal-on-metal contact from causing damage to moving parts. Fresh oil also plays a role in maintaining a healthy engine temperature by helping to redistribute heat from the combustion chamber.

Replace Fuel Filter

To prevent contaminated gas from making its way into your engine, you’ll want to replace your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Fuel filter replacement can also boost your MPGs.

New Air Filter

For optimal performance and gas mileage,  it’s best to get a new air filter every 15,000 miles. This will prevent your engine from burning up additional fuel to make up for a lack of air. As the engine burns more fuel, its temperature can go up, which could lead to engine trouble.

Use Synthetic Oil

More and more people are choosing synthetic oil because it supremely protects engine parts, while needing to be changed less frequently.

Avoid Running on Empty

As fuel gets extremely low, any debris in the gas is liable to settle in at the bottom of the tank. Then when you use the last bit of gas, there’s an increased likelihood of that debris being directed to your engine.
